Het Burgemeester Van Grunsvenplein in Heerlen lag er grauw en desolaat bij. De opdracht voor de herinrichting was helder: maak een samenhangend geheel met ruimte voor meerdere functies, een menselijke maat en een inrichting rekening houdend met het veranderende klimaat. Buro Lubbers verenigde de diverse wensen tot een aansprekend toekomstbestendig ontwerp.
De ruimte tussen de loop- en fietsroutes is vergroend met bomen, verhoogde plantvakken en grasbestrating. Omdat zich onder het plein een parkeergarage bevindt, zijn de vakken opgetild voor het wortelpakket en afgebakend met zitranden. Brede banden kaderen de lager gelegen plantvakken. Deze worden van regenwater voorzien door wadibanden. Het vele groen zorgt voor verkoeling in de zomer waardoor het op warme dagen nu wel aangenaam is om er tijd door te brengen of een evenement bij te wonen.
